Yesterday Apple presented new smartphones, today Huawei presented them. The company showed off the Mate XT, the first foldable smartphone that bends in two places rather than just one. When folded, the screen size is 6.4 inches, and when fully unfolded, the smartphone turns into a tablet with a 10.2-inch screen. Let's figure out why such a device has appeared only now and whether this form factor will become popular.
Why is it difficult to make a foldable smartphone with three sections?
Previous foldable smartphones had only one fold point - in the middle. As a rule, they fold “inward,” although there were models in which the screen remained outside when folded. Engineers select the materials and structure of the screen so that the upper layers can withstand tension, and the lower ones can withstand compression. It’s the same with hinges - their mechanism is also selected according to the direction in which the display is bent.
The Huawei Mate XT has two bending points, and the screen bends in different directions, so engineers had to select materials and layer structure so that they can withstand multidirectional bends. Also, the smartphone uses different hinges on the left and right.
Another problem with folding smartphones is their large thickness when folded. In the new gadget it is 12.8 mm. For comparison:
🔸 The foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 has a thickness of 12.1 mm
🔸 The thinnest “folding phone” to date, Honor Magic V3, has 9.2 mm
🔸 iPhone 16 has 7.8 mm.
But when unfolded, the Huawei Mate XT is very thin: two sections are 3.6 mm thick, and one is 4.75 mm thick. For comparison:
🔸 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 has 5.6 mm
🔸 Honor Magic V3 has 4.4 mm.
Is this the future of smartphones?
Perhaps, but definitely not the nearest one. Huawei Mate XT has at least several significant disadvantages:
🔸 It costs 260 thousand rubles
🔸 Much thicker than regular smartphones
🔸 The battery has a capacity of 5,600 mAh. This is slightly more than smartphones, but much less than 10-inch tablets
🔸 This is the first device with such a screen. It is unknown how resistant it is to bending and other everyday stress.
Other companies, if they want to develop a similar device, will have to make the same compromises while the technology of the screens and other components is at the current level.Follow Us on Telegram -
